Tracy Lieu, MD, MPH, is a Research Scientist in the Division of Research, Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC), a Deputy Editor for JAMA, and a pediatrician with The Permanente Medical Group. As director of DOR from 2012-2024, she led a department of 67 faculty research scientists and more than 600 staff whose mission is to transform health through research. She now serves as the KPNC Physician Advisor for Medical Education Research.
At JAMA, Dr. Lieu is the editor for child health and handles a broad range of manuscripts in preventive services and other fields. She is responsible for the JAMA Network Peer Review Academy and for enhancing synergy among the JAMA Network’s 13 journals.
Nationally and internationally, Dr. Lieu has served on the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. She has chaired the Health Services Organization and Delivery grant review committee and other committees for the National Institutes of Health and the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. Dr. Lieu’s career includes roles at the University of California San Francisco, Penn, and Harvard, where she was the founding director of the Center for Healthcare Research in Pediatrics and received the medical school’s A. Clifford Barger Award for Excellence in Mentoring. She is a professor in the Bernard J. Tyson Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine and an affiliate professor in the UCSF School of Medicine.
Dr. Lieu is a practicing pediatrician who helped found the field of child health services research and led seminal studies in vaccine safety, health policy and decision sciences. Her current research studies how virtual care can be designed to facilitate quality and access for diverse patient populations. She is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine.
